Troubleshooting WhatsApp not sending or receiving messages

Problem

Messages on WhatsApp are stuck with a clock icon (not sent), one gray tick (sent but not delivered), or not arriving at all. This can be caused by network problems, app restrictions, or issues with the recipient’s device.


Solution

Most delivery problems can be resolved by checking your internet connection, WhatsApp permissions, and ensuring the recipient’s phone is active and connected.


Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Verify your internet connection

  1. Test other apps (e.g., browser, YouTube).
  2. If not working, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  3. Restart your router or modem if using Wi-Fi.

Step 2: Restart your phone

  • Rebooting clears temporary system or network glitches.

Step 3: Check recipient availability

  • If the recipient’s phone is off, out of signal, or their WhatsApp is uninstalled, your message will remain undelivered.

Step 4: Check WhatsApp permissions

  • Android: Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions → Allow Internet, SMS (if required), and Background data.
  • iPhone: Settings > WhatsApp → Enable Mobile Data and Background App Refresh.

Step 5: Update or reinstall WhatsApp

  1. Open the App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. Tap Update.
  3. If issues persist, reinstall WhatsApp.

Step 6: For WhatsApp Web/Desktop

  • Ensure your phone is online and WhatsApp is running in the background.
  • Refresh the browser or reconnect by scanning the QR code.
