How do I update Facebook Messenger to the latest version?

by Drew Alison · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Using an outdated version of Messenger can lead to bugs, missing features, crashes, or even security vulnerabilities. If Messenger isn’t functioning properly, updating it to the latest version often resolves the problem.

Solution

You can update Messenger through your device’s app store. Updates ensure you have the newest features, bug fixes, and security patches.

Step-by-step instructions

On Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap the profile icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Manage apps & device.
  4. Under “Updates available,” look for Messenger.
  5. Tap Update.
  6. Wait for the update to install, then reopen Messenger.

On iOS (iPhone/iPad)
7. Open the App Store.
8. Tap your profile icon in the top-right corner.
9. Scroll down to see available updates.
10. Find Messenger and tap Update.
11. Once finished, reopen Messenger to confirm it’s working.

Automatic updates (optional)
12. On Android, go to Play Store > Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps and enable.
13. On iOS, go to Settings > App Store > App Updates and turn on automatic updates.

Optional methods or tools

  • Messenger Lite (Android): Install this if your device struggles with the regular app.
  • Reinstall: If updating doesn’t work, uninstall Messenger and install the latest version from scratch.

Best practices or tips

  • Keep both Messenger and the Facebook app updated, as they sometimes depend on each other.
  • Enable auto-updates so you always stay current.
  • After updating, restart your phone to ensure the new version runs smoothly.
  • If the update won’t install, check for device storage space or pending system updates.
