How do I block and unblock a contact on WhatsApp?

by Casey Lin · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: WhatsApp Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

You may want to stop someone from calling or messaging you on WhatsApp without deleting your account or changing your number. Later, you might decide to unblock them.

Solution

WhatsApp allows you to block contacts so they can’t send you messages, view your last seen, status, or profile photo. You can unblock them anytime.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Block a contact

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Go to the chat with the person you want to block.
  3. Tap their name/number at the top.
  4. Scroll down and tap Block Contact.
  5. Confirm by tapping Block.

Alternative method:

  1. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Privacy > Blocked Contacts.
  2. Tap Add New.
  3. Select the contact to block.

Step 2: Unblock a contact

  1. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Privacy > Blocked Contacts.
  2. Tap the contact you want to unblock.
  3. Select Unblock.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • You can also report a contact while blocking them: this sends the last few messages to WhatsApp for review (useful for spam or abuse).
  • On WhatsApp Web/Desktop, blocking and unblocking must still be done from your phone.

Best Practices / Tips

  • When you block someone:
    • They can’t see your Last Seen, Online status, Profile photo, or Status updates.
    • Messages they send won’t be delivered (only one gray tick appears).
  • Blocking doesn’t remove them from your contacts — you’ll need to delete their number from your phonebook if you want them completely gone.
  • You won’t receive notifications of blocked messages or calls, keeping your privacy intact.
