How do I recover a forgotten Signal PIN?

by Jordan Keats · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

You set a Signal PIN for registration lock and app features, but you’ve forgotten it. Without the PIN, you can’t change privacy settings, restore some features, or re-register Signal on a new device.

Solution

Signal PINs are designed for security and cannot be bypassed. Depending on whether you have access to your recovery options, you may need to reset the PIN — but this may involve waiting or losing data.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Try PIN reminders

  • Signal periodically asks you to enter your PIN.
  • Use these reminders to attempt different PINs if you think you may recall it.

Step 2: Reset your Signal PIN (with wait period)

  1. Open Signal.
  2. Tap Forgot PIN? when prompted.
  3. Confirm reset — Signal will start a 7-day countdown.
  4. After 7 days of inactivity (without entering the correct PIN), you can set a new PIN.

⚠️ If you don’t log into Signal during this time, you may lose stored settings like contacts and profiles.

Step 3: Re-register (if necessary)

  • If you’re locked out completely, uninstall and reinstall Signal.
  • Log in with your phone number.
  • After the reset period, you’ll be able to create a new PIN.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Use a password manager in the future to securely store your Signal PIN.
  • Write down the PIN and keep it in a safe, offline place.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Always set a recovery email (Signal may use it for PIN recovery in future versions).
  • Keep your PIN simple enough to remember, but complex enough for security.
  • Do not skip reminders — they’re meant to help you remember the PIN.
  • Never share your PIN — even Signal support cannot reset it for you instantly.
