Troubleshooting Telegram not connecting to the internet

by Casey Lin · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: Telegram Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop, Web)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Telegram fails to connect, messages are stuck on “waiting for network,” or you can’t send/receive messages. This can happen on both mobile data and Wi-Fi, and sometimes only on Telegram while other apps work fine.

Solution

Connection issues are usually caused by unstable internet, blocked ports (by network or firewall), or app restrictions. Adjusting network and device settings can restore connectivity.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Check your internet connection

  1. Test another app or open a website.
  2. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  3. Restart your router or modem if using Wi-Fi.

Step 2: Restart your device

  • A quick reboot can clear temporary network glitches.

Step 3: Check if Telegram is blocked in your region

  • Some networks or countries restrict Telegram.
  • Try using a VPN to bypass restrictions.

Step 4: Clear app cache (Android only)

  1. Settings > Apps > Telegram > Storage & Cache.
  2. Tap Clear Cache.
  3. Reopen Telegram.

Step 5: Update or reinstall Telegram

  • Go to Google Play Store or App Store and check for updates.
  • If still failing, uninstall and reinstall Telegram.

Step 6: For Telegram Desktop/Web

  • Refresh the browser or restart the desktop app.
  • Check firewall/antivirus settings that may block Telegram traffic.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Disable battery saver or data saver, which may restrict background connections.
  • If using a proxy/VPN inside Telegram:
    1. Go to Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy Settings.
    2. Turn off or change proxy server.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Keep Telegram updated to the latest version.
  • If your network often blocks Telegram, configure a MTProto Proxy inside Telegram settings.
  • Use Wi-Fi calling/data in areas with weak mobile coverage for better stability.
  • Check Telegram’s official Twitter or Status page if there’s a global outage.
