How do I change my Snapchat username or display name?

by Casey Lin · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Snapchat (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

You want to change how you appear on Snapchat. Your username (the unique ID you chose at signup) and your display name (what friends see) are different, and the rules for changing them are not the same.

Solution

Snapchat allows you to change your username once per year and update your display name anytime.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Change Snapchat username (once per year)

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. Tap your profile icon > Settings (⚙️).
  3. Select Username.
  4. Tap Change Username.
  5. Enter a new unique username (if available).
  6. Confirm the change — you can only do this once every 12 months.

Step 2: Change Snapchat display name (unlimited)

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. Tap your profile icon > Settings (⚙️).
  3. Tap Name.
  4. Enter a new display name.
  5. Tap Save.

Your new display name will appear in chats, stories, and friend lists.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • If your desired username is taken, you must choose a variation (e.g., add numbers or underscores).
  • If you prefer privacy, choose a nickname for your display name instead of your real name.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Pick a memorable username if you plan to share it publicly — you can’t change it often.
  • Use a friendly display name if you only want friends to recognize you.
  • Avoid inappropriate names — Snapchat may restrict your account.
  • Let friends know if you change your username to avoid confusion.
