Tips for identifying and avoiding scams on Signal

by Jordan Keats · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Scammers sometimes use Signal to trick users into sharing personal information, money, or account details. Common tactics include impersonation, phishing links, and fake verification code requests.

Solution

Learn how to recognize scams, protect your account with security features, and report suspicious activity.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Recognize common Signal scams

  • Verification code scams: Fraudsters ask for your Signal SMS code.
  • Impersonation scams: Someone pretends to be a friend, relative, or official account.
  • Phishing links: Links leading to fake websites requesting personal or financial data.
  • Fake giveaways: Promises of money, crypto, or prizes in exchange for information.

Step 2: Verify suspicious contacts

  1. Check the person’s phone number — scammers often use similar numbers.
  2. If unsure, confirm the identity through another method (e.g., phone call).
  3. Use Safety Numbers in Signal to verify secure communication.

Step 3: Block and report scammers

  1. Open the suspicious chat.
  2. Tap their name > Scroll down > Block.
  3. Choose Report Spam if necessary.

Step 4: Protect your account

  1. Enable Registration Lock (Signal PIN) under Settings > Privacy.
  2. Never share your SMS verification code with anyone.
  3. Regularly review Linked Devices and remove any you don’t recognize.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Use a password manager to secure your Signal PIN.
  • Bookmark official Signal help pages: https://support.signal.org.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Signal will never ask for your SMS code or PIN.
  • Be skeptical of urgent requests for money or personal details.
  • Avoid clicking suspicious links — especially shortened URLs.
  • Educate friends and family to recognize scam attempts.
  • Always download Signal only from official sources (Play Store, App Store, signal.org).
