How do I create and manage group chats in Messenger?

by Drew Alison · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS, Web, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Messenger allows you to chat with multiple people at once through group chats, but some users don’t know how to create or manage them. Without this, you may struggle to coordinate with friends, family, or colleagues.

Solution

You can create a group chat in Messenger by starting a new conversation with multiple contacts, then manage settings such as the group name, participants, and notifications.

Step-by-step instructions

Creating a group chat (mobile app: Android/iOS)

  1. Open the Messenger app.
  2. Tap the pencil icon (new message).
  3. Select Create a New Group.
  4. Choose multiple friends from your contact list.
  5. Tap Next, then enter a group name.
  6. Tap Create to start the chat.

Creating a group chat (Messenger Web/Desktop app)
7. Go to messenger.com or open the Messenger desktop app.
8. Click New Message.
9. Select multiple contacts.
10. Enter your first message and send — this creates the group.

Managing group settings
11. Open the group chat.
12. Tap the group name at the top (mobile) or the info icon (desktop).
13. Here you can:

  • Change the group name
  • Add or remove members
  • Assign group admins
  • Change the group photo
  • Mute or customize notifications

Optional methods or tools

  • Messenger Rooms: For large video calls beyond standard group chat.
  • Polls: Create polls in group chats to quickly gather opinions.

Best practices or tips

  • Assign admins if the group has many members to help manage it.
  • Use nicknames and themes to personalize your group chat.
  • Mute busy groups if you don’t want constant notifications.
  • Remember: Anyone in the group can see all messages, so share carefully.
