How do I recover a forgotten WhatsApp PIN?
Applies to: WhatsApp Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
You enabled two-step verification on WhatsApp but forgot the 6-digit PIN. Without it, you may be locked out when reinstalling or verifying WhatsApp on your device.
Solution
If you set a recovery email, you can easily reset your PIN. Without an email, WhatsApp allows a reset only after 7 days.
Step-by-step Instructions
Method 1: Reset using recovery email (recommended)
- Open WhatsApp.
- When prompted for your PIN, tap Forgot PIN?
- Choose Send Email.
- Open the email WhatsApp sent to your registered address.
- Tap the reset link and confirm.
- Create a new 6-digit PIN.
Method 2: Wait 7 days (no email set)
- Open WhatsApp and try to log in.
- If you didn’t add an email, you’ll see a message saying you can’t verify.
- Wait 7 days from the last time you used WhatsApp.
- After the wait, you can log in without the PIN and set a new one.
- Note: Any messages received during the lockout will be lost.
Method 3: Disable two-step verification (if logged in already)
- Open WhatsApp > Settings > Account > Two-step verification.
- Tap Disable.
- Re-enable with a new PIN and email address.
Optional Methods or Tools
- Use a password manager to securely store your WhatsApp PIN for future reference.
- If your email account is compromised, reset your email password before using it to reset the PIN.
Best Practices / Tips
- Always add a recovery email when enabling two-step verification.
- Choose a PIN that’s not obvious (avoid birthdays or simple sequences).
- Never share your PIN with others — WhatsApp staff will never ask for it.
- Set calendar reminders to periodically confirm your PIN, so you don’t forget it.
