How do I restore deleted Telegram chats and messages?

by Casey Lin · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: Telegram Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop, Web)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Unlike WhatsApp, Telegram is cloud-based, which means chats and media are stored on Telegram servers. Once a chat or message is deleted, recovery options are limited. Users often want to retrieve accidentally deleted messages or chats.

Solution

Telegram does not provide a built-in “restore deleted messages” option. However, depending on how and where the data was deleted, you may be able to recover it using cloud sync, exported backups, or device storage.

Step-by-step Instructions

Method 1: Check Telegram Cloud Sync

  • If you deleted Telegram from your phone but didn’t delete the chat, reinstall the app and log back in with the same number.
  • Your messages and media should reappear (as they are stored in the cloud).

Method 2: Recover from “Recently Deleted” (for media only)

  • On your device, open Gallery/Photos app.
  • Check the Recently Deleted/Trash folder to see if photos/videos sent via Telegram are still available.

Method 3: Use Telegram’s Export Chat Feature (if enabled before deletion)

  1. On Desktop, go to Settings > Advanced > Export Telegram Data.
  2. Select Chats, Media, or Files you had previously exported.
  3. Open the exported data folder to view saved messages.

Method 4: Check linked devices

  • If you deleted a chat on one device, check another device (PC, tablet) linked to your account. Sometimes sync delays allow recovery if not refreshed.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Third-party recovery apps (e.g., Dr.Fone, iMyFone) may help retrieve media files from device storage, but they cannot recover deleted cloud messages.
  • If messages were sent in groups/channels, ask other participants to resend them.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Always back up important chats using Telegram Desktop export before deletion.
  • Remember:
    • Deleting a chat removes it from your account only — the other person may still have the conversation.
    • “Secret Chats” are not stored in the cloud; once deleted, they are permanently lost.
  • Use Saved Messages as a personal cloud to keep copies of important chats.
