Troubleshooting issues with downloading media in Telegram
Applies to: Telegram Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop, Web)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
Photos, videos, voice notes, or documents in Telegram fail to download, get stuck, or show an error. Sometimes only certain file types won’t download.
Solution
Media download issues are usually caused by poor connectivity, storage limits, app permissions, or proxy/VPN settings. Adjusting these often fixes the problem.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Check your internet connection
- Test another app to confirm internet access.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Restart your router if using Wi-Fi.
Step 2: Check available device storage
- Android: Settings > Storage
- iPhone: Settings > General > iPhone Storage
- Free up space by deleting unused files or apps if your storage is full.
Step 3: Verify date & time settings
- Go to your phone’s Date & Time settings.
- Enable Set Automatically — incorrect system time can block downloads.
Step 4: Check Telegram permissions
- Android:
- Settings > Apps > Telegram > Permissions.
- Allow Storage/Photos and Media.
- iPhone:
- Settings > Telegram.
- Ensure Photos and Local Network (if available) are enabled.
Step 5: Clear cache and restart app
- Android: Settings > Apps > Telegram > Storage & Cache > Clear Cache.
- iPhone: Telegram > Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage > Clear Cache.
- Restart Telegram and retry.
Step 6: Check proxy/VPN settings
- Open Telegram > Settings > Data and Storage > Proxy Settings.
- If a proxy/VPN is enabled, disable it and try again.
Step 7: Update or reinstall Telegram
- Update via Play Store/App Store.
- If issues persist, uninstall and reinstall Telegram (your cloud chats will sync back).
Optional Methods or Tools
- If downloads fail only on Wi-Fi, check if your router blocks Telegram ports.
- On Desktop, ensure antivirus/firewall isn’t blocking Telegram.
- If in a restricted country, use a stable MTProto proxy or VPN.
Best Practices / Tips
- Always keep Telegram updated.
- Clear cache regularly to prevent file handling issues.
- For large files, use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data.
- Avoid downloading suspicious files — they may contain malware.
