Troubleshooting WhatsApp backup stuck on Google Drive or iCloud
Applies to: WhatsApp Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
Your WhatsApp backup to Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iPhone) gets stuck, takes too long, or fails entirely. This prevents chats and media from being safely stored.
Solution
Stuck backups are usually caused by poor connectivity, low storage, or incorrect account settings. Adjusting these can get your backup working again.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Check your internet connection
- Connect to a strong Wi-Fi network (recommended).
- If on mobile data, enable backups over data:
- Android: Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > Back up using mobile data.
- iPhone: Settings > iCloud Drive > Use Mobile Data.
Step 2: Verify account setup
- Android:
- Ensure you’re signed into the correct Google account.
- Check Google Drive: Menu > Backups > WhatsApp.
- iPhone:
- Confirm you’re signed into the right Apple ID.
- Go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud and ensure iCloud Drive is enabled.
Step 3: Check available storage
- Google Drive: Ensure enough space in your Google account.
- iCloud: Go to Settings > iCloud > Manage Storage to free up space if needed.
Step 4: Update WhatsApp and system software
- Go to Play Store/App Store > Update.
- Restart your device and try again.
Step 5: Restart or force a fresh backup
- Cancel the stuck backup.
- Restart your phone.
- Open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now to retry.
Optional Methods or Tools
- For Android: Clear Google Play Services cache (Settings > Apps > Google Play Services > Storage > Clear Cache).
- For iPhone: Log out of iCloud, reboot, and log back in.
- As a workaround, create a local backup (Android only) to keep a copy on your device.
Best Practices / Tips
- Back up while your phone is charging and on Wi-Fi to avoid interruptions.
- Keep auto-backups set to daily or weekly for minimal data loss.
- Avoid very large videos in backups — disable “Include Videos” if space is limited.
- Ensure battery saver and low-power modes are turned off during backups.
