Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

When you get a new phone or tablet, you’ll need to reinstall and set up Facebook Messenger to continue chatting with friends. If you skip a step, you might not be able to log in, sync your contacts, or access past conversations.

Solution

You can set up Facebook Messenger by downloading the app from your device’s app store, signing in with your Facebook account, and adjusting settings for notifications and contacts.

Step-by-step instructions

On Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Messenger (by Meta).
  3. Tap Install and wait for the app to download.
  4. Once installed, open the app.
  5. Log in using your Facebook account credentials.
  6. Grant permissions if prompted (contacts, microphone, camera, notifications).

On iOS (iPhone/iPad)

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Search for Messenger (by Meta).
  3. Tap Get and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or Apple ID password.
  4. Open the app after installation.
  5. Log in with your Facebook account or continue with the account linked to your device.
  6. Allow or deny permissions (notifications, contacts, microphone, camera).

Final setup
7. Choose whether to sync your phone contacts with Messenger.
8. Adjust notification preferences as needed.
9. Start chatting, calling, or sharing media with your contacts.

Optional methods or tools

  • Messenger Lite: A lighter version of Messenger for devices with limited storage or slower connections.
  • Messenger Web: Access Messenger directly at messenger.com if you don’t want to install the app.

Best practices or tips

  • Keep the app updated to the latest version for new features and security fixes.
  • Use a strong Facebook password and enable two-factor authentication to protect your account.
  • If you use multiple devices, Messenger will stay synced across them.
  • Customize notification settings to avoid being overwhelmed by alerts.
