How do I recover deleted messages or conversations in Messenger?

by Drew Alison · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS, Web, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

If you accidentally delete a conversation in Messenger, you may want to get it back. However, unlike archived chats, deleted messages are not easy to recover. Many users confuse deleting with archiving, which can lead to unnecessary panic.

Solution

Deleted messages on Messenger are generally permanent and cannot be restored from within the app. However, you can check if the chat was archived instead, use Facebook’s data download option, or look for synced backups.

Step-by-step instructions

Check if the chat was archived, not deleted

  1. Open the Messenger app.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-left corner.
  3. Select Archived Chats.
  4. Search for the conversation to see if it was archived instead of deleted.

Check on Messenger Web/Desktop
5. Go to messenger.com.
6. Click the three-dot menu > Archived chats.
7. Look for the missing conversation.

Download your Facebook data
8. Open Facebook (mobile app or web).
9. Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
10. Select Your Facebook Information > Download Your Information.
11. Choose Messages and set a date range.
12. Download and extract the data to see old messages (only works if they were still on Facebook’s servers).

Check device backups
13. If you regularly back up your phone, check if your messages may be stored in a previous backup.
14. Restoring a full device backup may bring back older conversations.

Optional methods or tools

  • Third-party recovery apps: Some claim to retrieve deleted messages but are often unreliable and risky for privacy.
  • Email notifications: If you enabled message notifications via email, you may find parts of conversations saved in your inbox.

Best practices or tips

  • Use archive instead of delete if you just want to hide chats.
  • Regularly back up your Facebook data to have copies of your conversations.
  • Be cautious with third-party recovery tools, as they may compromise your account security.
  • Once deleted, messages cannot be recovered through Messenger itself.
