How do I troubleshoot Messenger voice or video calls not working?

by Drew Alison · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS, Web, Desktop)

Problem

Messenger supports free voice and video calls, but sometimes calls fail to connect, have no audio, or the video doesn’t work. This can be due to poor internet, missing app permissions, outdated software, or device conflicts.

Solution

You can fix Messenger call issues by checking your internet, updating the app, adjusting device permissions, and testing microphone or camera settings.

Step-by-step instructions

Check your internet connection

  1. Make sure you’re connected to a stable Wi-Fi or mobile data network.
  2. Test your speed by loading another app or website.
  3. Switch to Wi-Fi if mobile data is weak, or restart your router.

Update the Messenger app
4. Open the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).
5. Check for updates to Messenger and install them.
6. Restart the app.

Check app permissions
7. On Android: Go to Settings > Apps > Messenger > Permissions.
8. On iOS: Go to Settings > Messenger.
9. Ensure Microphone and Camera permissions are enabled.

Test microphone and camera
10. Try using your microphone and camera in another app to confirm they’re working.
11. Close other apps that may be using the microphone or camera.

For Messenger Web/Desktop
12. Use messenger.com or the desktop app.
13. Allow browser permissions for microphone and camera.
14. Update your browser or desktop app to the latest version.

Restart and retry
15. Restart your phone or computer.
16. Reopen Messenger and try the call again.

Optional methods or tools

  • Headphones with mic: Can solve echo or poor audio issues.
  • Messenger Lite (Android): May handle calls better on slower networks.
  • External webcam/mic: Useful if your built-in hardware is faulty.

Best practices or tips

  • Use Wi-Fi for longer calls to avoid mobile data drops.
  • Ensure your device is charged — video calls drain battery quickly.
  • Close unused apps to free up memory for smoother calls.
  • If the issue persists, uninstall and reinstall Messenger.
