Tips for managing Snapchat storage and data usage

by Casey Lin · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Snapchat (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Snapchat can quickly use up device storage with cached data, Memories, and media downloads. It may also consume large amounts of mobile data when loading stories, snaps, and lenses.

Solution

You can reduce storage and data usage by clearing cache, adjusting settings, and using Snapchat’s built-in Data Saver mode.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Clear cache regularly

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. Go to Profile > Settings (⚙️) > Clear Cache.
  3. Tap Clear All (Android) or Continue (iOS).

Step 2: Use Snapchat’s Data Saver

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. Go to Settings > Data Saver.
  3. Enable Data Saver.
  4. Choose whether to apply it Always or for a set duration.

Step 3: Manage Memories storage

  • Save to Camera Roll instead of Memories if you prefer local storage.
  • Back up important Memories to iCloud (iOS) or Google Photos (Android).

Step 4: Disable auto-downloads

  1. Go to Settings > Permissions > Background App Refresh (iOS) or Background Data (Android).
  2. Limit background downloads to Wi-Fi only.

Step 5: Free up device storage

  • On Android: Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Storage > Clear Cache.
  • On iPhone: Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Snapchat → Offload App.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Use your phone’s built-in storage management tool to monitor Snapchat usage.
  • If you’re on a limited data plan, track usage in your carrier app.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Enable Data Saver if you use mobile data often.
  • Regularly back up Memories to external storage before clearing cache.
  • Use Wi-Fi for viewing and uploading Snaps, especially videos.
  • Restart your device weekly to keep Snapchat running smoothly.
