How do I block or unblock someone on Messenger?
Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS, Web, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
Sometimes you may want to stop someone from contacting you on Messenger. Blocking prevents them from sending you messages or seeing when you’re active. On the other hand, you might later decide to unblock someone to resume communication.
Solution
You can block or unblock someone on Messenger through the chat settings or your privacy settings. Blocking on Messenger does not remove them as a Facebook friend (unless you choose to block them on Facebook as well).
Step-by-step instructions
Blocking on mobile (Android/iOS)
- Open the Messenger app.
- Go to the chat with the person you want to block.
- Tap their name at the top of the chat.
- Scroll down and select Block.
- Choose Block on Messenger (to stop messages) or Block on Facebook (to remove them entirely).
Blocking on Messenger Web/Desktop
6. Go to messenger.com or open the desktop app.
7. Select the conversation with the person.
8. Click the info icon at the top right.
9. Scroll down and choose Block.
10. Confirm whether you want to block on Messenger only or on Facebook as well.
Unblocking someone (mobile or desktop)
11. Open Messenger settings (tap your profile picture).
12. Go to Privacy > Blocked Accounts.
13. Find the person you blocked.
14. Tap their name and select Unblock on Messenger.
15. They will now be able to message you again.
Optional methods or tools
- Restrict mode: Instead of blocking, restrict a contact so their messages go to “Message Requests” without notifications.
- Report: If someone is harassing you, use the Report option in addition to blocking.
Best practices or tips
- Blocking is private — the other person is not notified.
- If you block someone on Messenger but not on Facebook, they can still see your posts or profile depending on your Facebook privacy settings.
- Use restrict for temporary boundaries without a full block.
- Review your blocked list occasionally to make sure it matches your current preferences.
