by Jordan Keats · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Using an outdated version of Signal can cause crashes, missed features, or even security vulnerabilities. Updating ensures you have the latest privacy improvements, bug fixes, and functionality.

Solution

Signal can be updated through official app stores (Android/iOS) or directly from the Signal website (Desktop).

Step-by-step Instructions

On Android

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Tap the search bar and enter Signal.
  3. If an update is available, tap Update.
  4. Optionally, enable auto-updates:
    • Play Store > Profile > Settings > Network Preferences > Auto-update apps.

On iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open the App Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon (top-right).
  3. Scroll to Available Updates.
  4. If Signal is listed, tap Update.
  5. To auto-update: Settings > App Store > App Updates → ON.

On Desktop (Windows, Mac, Linux)

  • If installed via official website:
    1. Open Signal Desktop.
    2. Go to File > Preferences > Help > Check for updates.
    3. Download and install if prompted.
  • If installed via Microsoft Store or Mac App Store, updates happen automatically.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Subscribe to Signal’s official blog to learn about new features.
  • Enable auto-update on all platforms to avoid missing critical security patches.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Always update Signal from official sources (Play Store, App Store, Signal.org).
  • Avoid downloading APKs from untrusted sites — they may be modified or unsafe.
  • Restart your device after updating for smoother performance.
  • Keep your OS updated alongside Signal for maximum stability.
