How do I fix delayed Signal message delivery?

by Jordan Keats · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Messages in Signal arrive late, only deliver when you open the app, or show long delays. This usually happens due to background restrictions, poor internet, or battery optimization settings.

Solution

You can fix delayed delivery by ensuring Signal can run in the background and has unrestricted access to the internet.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Check internet connection

  1. Test another app (browser, email) to confirm speed.
  2. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  3. Restart your router if using Wi-Fi.

Step 2: Disable battery optimization

  • Android:
    1. Settings > Apps > Signal > Battery.
    2. Set to Unrestricted or Don’t optimize.
  • iPhone:
    • Settings > Battery > Turn off Low Power Mode.

Step 3: Enable background data

  • Android:
    • Settings > Apps > Signal > Mobile Data & Wi-Fi > Allow background data usage.
  • iPhone:
    • Settings > Signal > Background App Refresh > ON.

Step 4: Check notification settings

  • Ensure Signal notifications are enabled (so the app can wake up for new messages).
  • Android: Settings > Apps > Signal > Notifications.
  • iPhone: Settings > Notifications > Signal.

Step 5: Update Signal

  • Go to Play Store or App Store.
  • Install the latest version to fix performance issues.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Disable VPNs/Proxies, which may slow down encrypted message delivery.
  • Clear app cache (Android: Settings > Apps > Signal > Storage > Clear Cache).
  • Check Signal Status if global delays are reported.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Keep Signal running in the background for real-time delivery.
  • Restart your phone regularly to refresh system processes.
  • Avoid third-party “task killer” apps — they can block Signal from working.
  • Ensure your device has enough storage and RAM for smooth performance.
