Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
When you upgrade or replace your phone, you’ll want to transfer your Signal account, messages, and media. Since Signal doesn’t use cloud storage, transfers must be done using local backups (Android) or encrypted device-to-device migration (iOS).
Solution
Signal provides built-in tools for secure transfers depending on your platform.
Step-by-step Instructions
On Android (using local backup)
- On your old phone, open Signal > Settings > Chats > Chat backups.
- Turn on Chat backups and create a backup file.
- Copy the
.backupfile and 30-digit passphrase to your new phone.- Use USB, SD card, or secure cloud storage.
- Install Signal on your new phone.
- During setup, tap Restore from backup.
- Enter the 30-digit passphrase to decrypt the backup.
- Wait for messages and media to restore.
On iPhone (encrypted device-to-device transfer)
- Install Signal on your new iPhone.
- Keep both phones nearby with Bluetooth/Wi-Fi enabled.
- Open Signal on both devices.
- On the old phone, approve the transfer when prompted.
- On the new phone, scan the QR code displayed on the old device.
- Messages and media will transfer securely.
When changing phone numbers
- On your old phone: Settings > Account > Change phone number.
- Enter your new number.
- Signal updates your account so groups and contacts recognize the new number.
Optional Methods or Tools
- For iOS, you can also include Signal in a full encrypted iCloud/iTunes device backup.
- For Android, keep backup files in secure cloud storage for emergencies.
Best Practices / Tips
- Always back up before switching phones.
- Store the 30-digit backup passphrase securely (password manager recommended).
- Keep both devices charged and connected to Wi-Fi during transfer.
- Remember: If you skip backup/transfer, your old messages cannot be recovered.
