Troubleshooting Signal not sending or receiving messages
Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
Messages in Signal get stuck on “Sending,” show only a single check mark (sent but not delivered), or don’t arrive at all. Sometimes you only receive messages when reopening the app.
Solution
Most messaging issues are caused by poor internet connectivity, app restrictions, or server disruptions. Fixing network and device settings usually resolves the problem.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Check your internet connection
- Test another app or website to confirm connectivity.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Restart your router if using Wi-Fi.
Step 2: Restart Signal and your device
- Force close Signal and reopen it.
- Restart your phone to refresh system services.
Step 3: Update Signal
- Go to the Google Play Store or App Store.
- Update to the latest version.
Step 4: Disable battery optimization / background restrictions
- Android: Settings > Apps > Signal > Battery > Battery Optimization → Don’t optimize.
- iPhone: Settings > Battery > turn off Low Power Mode.
Step 5: Allow background data usage
- Android: Settings > Apps > Signal > Mobile Data & Wi-Fi → Enable Background data.
- iPhone: Settings > Signal → Enable Background App Refresh.
Step 6: Check if Signal servers are down
- Visit Signal Status to confirm if it’s a global outage.
Optional Methods or Tools
- Disable VPN/Proxy — they can block Signal’s encrypted traffic.
- Clear app cache (Android: Settings > Apps > Signal > Storage > Clear Cache).
- If using Signal Desktop, ensure your phone is online since it relays messages.
Best Practices / Tips
- Keep Signal updated for stability and bug fixes.
- Restart your device regularly to keep background services refreshed.
- Avoid third-party apps that aggressively kill background processes.
- Remember: If someone blocks you, your messages will show only one check mark and won’t deliver.
