How do I fix Signal crashing on Android/iPhone?
Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
Signal crashes on launch, freezes during use, or closes unexpectedly when sending messages, making calls, or loading media. This can happen due to outdated apps, corrupted cache, low storage, or OS conflicts.
Solution
Most crashes can be fixed by updating Signal, clearing cache, freeing up storage, or reinstalling the app.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Update Signal
- Open the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
- Search for Signal.
- Tap Update if available.
Step 2: Restart your device
- Reboot to clear temporary system glitches.
Step 3: Clear app cache/data
- Android:
- Settings > Apps > Signal > Storage.
- Tap Clear Cache.
- If needed, tap Clear Data (this logs you out — back up first).
- iPhone:
- Signal doesn’t offer a separate cache clear option — reinstall if needed.
Step 4: Free up device storage
- Check available storage:
- Android: Settings > Storage.
- iPhone: Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Delete unused apps or large files. Signal needs free space to function.
Step 5: Reinstall Signal
- Back up chats (Android: local backup; iPhone: device transfer).
- Uninstall Signal.
- Reinstall from Play Store or App Store.
- Log back in with your number and restore backup if available.
Step 6: Update your OS
- Android: Settings > System > Software Update.
- iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update.
Optional Methods or Tools
- Disable third-party “cleaner” or “task killer” apps — they can cause instability.
- On rooted/jailbroken devices, restore to official OS for best stability.
- If crashes persist, report bugs to support@signal.org with logs.
Best Practices / Tips
- Regularly update Signal and your OS to reduce bugs.
- Keep at least 1–2 GB free storage for smooth app performance.
- Enable chat backups so reinstalling doesn’t cause data loss.
- Avoid unofficial Signal clones or modified versions — they are unstable and unsafe.
