Troubleshooting Telegram not syncing across devices
Applies to: Telegram Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop, Web)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
Telegram is designed for cloud sync, but sometimes chats, media, or updates don’t appear across your devices. For example, messages sent on mobile may not show up on Desktop, or contacts and settings aren’t consistent.
Solution
Sync issues are usually caused by poor internet connectivity, outdated apps, or active sessions that are out of date.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Check your internet connection
- Ensure both devices (phone and Desktop/Web) are online.
- Switch networks (Wi-Fi ↔ Mobile Data) to test.
Step 2: Refresh Telegram
- On mobile: Force close the app and reopen it.
- On Desktop/Web: Reload the app or browser tab.
Step 3: Update Telegram
- Go to Google Play Store, App Store, or Telegram Desktop.
- Install the latest version — sync bugs are often fixed in updates.
Step 4: Log out and log back in
- On the device that isn’t syncing, go to Settings > Devices.
- Log out of that session.
- Log back in with your phone number.
Step 5: Check active sessions
- Go to Settings > Devices.
- Remove outdated or suspicious devices that may conflict with sync.
Step 6: Clear cache (if media not syncing)
- Android: Settings > Apps > Telegram > Storage > Clear Cache.
- iPhone: Telegram > Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage > Clear Cache.
Optional Methods or Tools
- If Telegram Web isn’t syncing, try another browser.
- Use a VPN if Telegram is restricted on your network.
- Export chats on Desktop (Settings > Advanced > Export Telegram Data) as a backup.
Best Practices / Tips
- Keep all Telegram clients (mobile, Desktop, Web) updated.
- Avoid using unofficial Telegram apps that may not sync properly.
- Restart your phone and PC periodically to refresh services.
- If problems persist, reinstall Telegram — your cloud chats will sync back.
