Problem
Some Messenger conversations can become overwhelming due to frequent notifications, or you may want to temporarily stop seeing messages without blocking the person. Without using Messenger’s mute or ignore features, you might be constantly distracted.
Solution
You can manage unwanted notifications by muting a chat for a set period of time or ignoring it, which moves the conversation out of your main inbox without alerting the other person.
Step-by-step instructions
Muting a conversation (mobile app: Android/iOS)
- Open the Messenger app.
- Find the chat you want to mute.
- Tap and hold the conversation, then select Mute notifications.
- Choose a time frame: 15 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours, or until you turn it back on.
Muting a conversation (Messenger Web/Desktop)
5. Go to messenger.com or open the desktop app.
6. Hover over the chat and click the three dots (More options).
7. Select Mute notifications and choose the duration.
Ignoring a conversation
8. Open the conversation you want to ignore.
9. Tap the person’s name at the top (mobile) or the info icon (desktop).
10. Select Ignore messages.
11. The chat will move to your Message Requests folder, and you won’t receive notifications.
Optional methods or tools
- Archive chats: Hide less active conversations without muting or ignoring them.
- Custom notifications: Set specific sounds or alerts for important contacts while muting others.
Best practices or tips
- Use mute when you still want the chat in your inbox but without constant alerts.
- Use ignore when you want to step away from a conversation without blocking the person.
- Remember: The other person won’t be notified if you mute or ignore them.
- For persistent issues, consider blocking or reporting instead.
