How do I send messages, photos, and videos on Messenger?

by Drew Alison · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS, Web)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Messenger is designed for text and media sharing, but some users may not know how to send photos, videos, or other attachments alongside regular messages. Without this knowledge, you may miss out on using Messenger’s full communication features.

Solution

You can send messages, photos, and videos in Messenger through the mobile app or web version by selecting the chat, typing your message, and attaching the media you want to share.

Step-by-step instructions

Sending a text message (Android/iOS)

  1. Open the Messenger app.
  2. Select a contact or group from your chat list.
  3. Type your message in the text field at the bottom.
  4. Tap Send (paper plane icon).

Sending photos or videos
5. In the chat window, tap the Gallery/Photo icon.
6. Choose a photo or video from your device.
7. Tap Send.
8. To take a new photo or video, tap the Camera icon, capture it, and send.

On Messenger Web (Desktop)
9. Go to messenger.com or open the chat via Facebook.
10. Select a conversation.
11. Type your message in the box and hit Enter to send.
12. Click the Image/Attachment icon to upload and send photos or videos.

Optional methods or tools

  • Stickers, GIFs, and emojis: Add fun elements to your chats.
  • Voice messages: Hold down the microphone icon to record and send.
  • Files: On desktop, you can also attach documents.

Best practices or tips

  • Compress large videos before sending to avoid long upload times.
  • Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data for sending big media files.
  • Be mindful of privacy — anything you send can be saved or shared by the recipient.
  • If media isn’t sending, check your internet connection or update the app.
