Troubleshooting Snapchat crashing on iPhone or Android

by Casey Lin · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Snapchat (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Snapchat crashes on launch, freezes during use, or closes unexpectedly when sending snaps, recording videos, or viewing stories.

Solution

Crashes are usually caused by outdated apps, corrupted cache, storage problems, or OS conflicts.

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Update Snapchat

  1. Open the Play Store (Android) or App Store (iOS).
  2. Search for Snapchat.
  3. Tap Update if available.

Step 2: Restart your device

  • Restarting clears temporary bugs and refreshes system memory.

Step 3: Clear Snapchat cache

  • Android: Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Storage > Clear Cache.
  • iPhone: Snapchat > Settings > Clear Cache > Confirm.

Step 4: Free up device storage

  • Snapchat may crash if your phone is low on space.
  • Delete unused apps, large videos, or move files to cloud storage.

Step 5: Reinstall Snapchat

  1. Back up Memories (if not already saved).
  2. Uninstall Snapchat.
  3. Reinstall it from the Play Store or App Store.
  4. Log in again.

Step 6: Update your OS

  • Android: Settings > System > Software Update.
  • iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Leave the Snapchat Beta program (if you’re in it) — beta builds can be unstable.
  • On older phones, close background apps before opening Snapchat.
  • Contact Snapchat Support if crashes persist.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Keep both your OS and Snapchat updated.
  • Clear cache regularly to prevent app slowdowns.
  • Always download Snapchat only from official app stores.
  • Restart your phone once a week to refresh performance.
