Last updated: September 2025
Problem
If someone gains access to your Snapchat password, they could log into your account, view your friends, or misuse your profile. Relying only on a password makes your account vulnerable to hacking or phishing.
Solution
Snapchat offers Two-Factor Authentication (2FA), which adds an extra layer of security by requiring a verification code when logging in on a new device.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Enable Two-Factor Authentication
- Open Snapchat.
- Tap your profile icon > Settings (⚙️).
- Scroll down and tap Two-Factor Authentication.
- Choose Continue.
- Select a method:
- Text Message (SMS) → Snapchat sends login codes via SMS.
- Authenticator App (recommended) → Use apps like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy.
Step 2: Set up recovery codes
- In Two-Factor Authentication settings, tap Recovery Code.
- Snapchat will generate a set of backup codes.
- Write them down and store them securely (offline or in a password manager).
- These can be used if you lose access to your phone or authenticator app.
Step 3: Test login
- Log out and attempt to log back in.
- Enter your password + the code from your selected method.
Optional Methods or Tools
- Use a password manager to store both your Snapchat password and 2FA recovery codes.
- Enable device-level security (PIN, fingerprint, Face ID) for extra protection.
Best Practices / Tips
- Always choose Authenticator App over SMS for stronger security.
- Never share your verification codes with anyone.
- Regularly check for suspicious logins: Settings > Two-Factor Authentication > Forget Devices.
- Update your recovery codes if you lose access to them.
