How do I add friends on Snapchat using Snapcodes?

by Casey Lin · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Snapchat (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

You want to quickly add a friend on Snapchat but don’t want to manually search their username. Snapcodes (unique QR-style codes) make it easy to connect instantly.

Solution

You can add friends by scanning their Snapcode directly with your camera or from an image saved on your phone.

Step-by-step Instructions

Method 1: Scan a Snapcode with your camera

  1. Open Snapchat.
  2. Point your camera at your friend’s Snapcode (usually found in their profile).
  3. Press and hold on the Snapcode on your screen.
  4. A pop-up will appear with the option to Add Friend.
  5. Tap to confirm.

Method 2: Add a friend using a saved Snapcode image

  1. Ask your friend to send their Snapcode as an image.
  2. Save it to your phone’s gallery.
  3. Open Snapchat > Add Friends.
  4. Tap the ghost icon or Snapcode symbol in the corner.
  5. Select the saved Snapcode image.
  6. Tap Add Friend when prompted.

Method 3: Share your own Snapcode

  1. Open Snapchat and tap your profile icon.
  2. Your Snapcode appears at the top.
  3. Tap it to Share Snapcode via text, email, or social apps.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Print your Snapcode on business cards or flyers if using Snapchat professionally.
  • Share your Snapcode as a screenshot on other social media platforms.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Only scan Snapcodes from people you trust.
  • If adding new people, review your privacy settings: Settings > Who Can Contact Me.
  • Keep your Snapcode private if you don’t want random users adding you.
  • Consider using a Bitmoji-linked Snapcode for a personalized look.
