How do I back up and restore Signal messages?

by Jordan Keats · Published 29/09/2025 · Updated 29/09/2025

Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Signal stores all messages locally on your device for privacy. If you change phones or uninstall the app, messages are lost unless you create a backup. Users often need a way to back up and restore their chats.

Solution

Signal provides encrypted local backups on Android and device transfer on iOS. Messages cannot be restored from Signal’s servers.

Step-by-step Instructions

On Android: Create a backup

  1. Open Signal.
  2. Go to Settings > Chats > Chat backups.
  3. Tap Turn on.
  4. Signal will generate a 30-digit passphrase — write it down and keep it safe.
  5. Tap Create backup.
  6. A .backup file will be saved in your phone’s storage.

On Android: Restore from backup

  1. Copy the .backup file to your new phone.
  2. Install Signal and start setup.
  3. Tap Restore from backup.
  4. Enter your 30-digit passphrase.
  5. Your chats and media will be restored.

On iPhone: Transfer to a new device

  • iOS does not allow file-based backups. Instead, Signal uses encrypted device-to-device transfer.
  1. Install Signal on your new iPhone.
  2. Keep both old and new devices nearby.
  3. Open Signal on both devices and follow the in-app transfer instructions.
  4. All messages and media will move securely.

Optional Methods or Tools

  • Include Signal in your full iPhone iCloud/iTunes encrypted backup to keep a copy along with your apps.
  • Store Android backup files in a secure cloud service (Google Drive, Dropbox) — but keep the passphrase private.

Best Practices / Tips

  • Always enable backups if you rely on Signal daily.
  • Store the 30-digit passphrase securely (e.g., password manager). Without it, backups cannot be restored.
  • Periodically update backups, especially before switching devices.
  • Remember: Secret and disappearing messages are also included in backups if present at the time.
