How do I delete or archive chats in Messenger?

by Drew Alison · Published 01/10/2025 · Updated 01/10/2025

Applies to: Facebook Messenger (Android, iOS, Web, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025

Problem

Over time, your Messenger inbox can become cluttered with old conversations. You may want to remove them permanently or hide them temporarily without losing the history. Without knowing the difference between delete and archive, you might remove chats unintentionally.

Solution

Messenger gives you two options:

  • Delete: Permanently removes the conversation.
  • Archive: Hides the conversation from your inbox but allows you to access it again later.

Step-by-step instructions

On Android/iOS (mobile app)

  1. Open the Messenger app.
  2. Find the conversation you want to manage.
  • To archive:
    • Tap and hold the conversation.
    • Select Archive.
    • The chat will disappear from your inbox but remain accessible in “Archived Chats.”
  • To delete:
    • Tap and hold the conversation.
    • Select Delete.
    • Confirm deletion — the chat is permanently removed.

On Messenger Web/Desktop
3. Go to messenger.com or open the Messenger desktop app.
4. Hover over the conversation.
5. Click the three dots (More options).

  • To archive: Select Archive chat.
  • To delete: Select Delete chat and confirm.

Accessing archived chats
6. In Messenger mobile: Tap your profile picture > Archived chats.
7. On Messenger Web/Desktop: Click the three-dot menu > Archived chats.

Optional methods or tools

  • Search bar: Even archived conversations can be found by searching the contact’s name.
  • Restrict or mute: If you don’t want to delete or archive but need fewer interruptions.

Best practices or tips

  • Use archive for conversations you might need later, such as work or service chats.
  • Remember: Deleting a chat removes it only from your side — the other person still has the history.
  • Archive is reversible, but delete is permanent.
  • Regularly clean up your inbox to keep Messenger organized.
