Troubleshooting Signal not connecting to the internet
Applies to: Signal Messenger (Android, iOS, Desktop)
Last updated: September 2025
Problem
Signal won’t send or receive messages, calls won’t connect, or the app shows “Connecting…” even though your phone has internet access.
Solution
Connection issues are usually caused by unstable internet, restrictive network settings, or app-level restrictions like battery optimization.
Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Check your internet connection
- Test another app (e.g., browser, YouTube) to confirm internet access.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
- Restart your router if using Wi-Fi.
Step 2: Restart Signal and your device
- Force close Signal and reopen it.
- Restart your phone or computer.
Step 3: Disable battery optimization / background restrictions
- Android:
- Settings > Apps > Signal > Battery > Battery Optimization.
- Select Don’t optimize.
- iPhone:
- Ensure Low Power Mode is off (Settings > Battery).
Step 4: Check Signal permissions
- Android:
- Settings > Apps > Signal > Permissions → Allow Network/Internet and Background data.
- iPhone:
- Settings > Signal → Enable Mobile Data.
Step 5: Update Signal
- Go to Play Store or App Store.
- Update to the latest version for bug fixes and improved connectivity.
Step 6: For Signal Desktop
- Ensure your phone is online — Signal Desktop requires your phone to be connected.
- If sync fails, unlink and re-link your device:
- Signal Desktop > File > Preferences > Linked Devices.
- Tap Link New Device in Signal mobile app.
Optional Methods or Tools
- Disable VPNs or Proxies that may block Signal’s encrypted traffic.
- Check if Signal is down globally via Signal Status.
- For workplaces or restricted countries, ask if your network blocks Signal ports.
Best Practices / Tips
- Keep Signal updated to the latest version.
- Use Wi-Fi for calls when possible — mobile data may cause delays in poor coverage.
- Restart your phone every few days to refresh background processes.
- Avoid third-party apps that interfere with internet access (e.g., aggressive firewalls, task killers).
